The ijazah (certification) is a testimony from the granting Sheikh to the student, certifying that the student has recited the entire Quran from memory, with proper tajweed (rules of recitation) and proficiency in the specific narration or narrations for which the ijazah is granted. By obtaining this ijazah, the reader’s chain of transmission is connected to Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), and they become part of the chain of those who have transmitted the Book of Allah with an unbroken chain of narration.
To obtain the ijazah, it is customary for the Sheikhs to require the following from the student:
If the student wishes to obtain an ijazah for a single narration, such as the narration of Hafs, Warsh, or Qalun, they must have memorized the Quran with precise memorization and applied the rules of tajweed. It is also recommended to study a text in tajweed, preferably the poem of Ibn Al-Jazari, “Al-Muqaddimah.” Some Sheikhs may grant ijazah to those they deem qualified without requiring them to recite the entire Quran before them.
THE IMPORTANCE OF RECITING AND MEMORIZING THE QURAN:
Reciting the Quran is one of the best deeds and greatest acts of worship. It is recommended for every believer to frequently recite the Quran, as it brings immense benefits and rewards. Allah Almighty says in the Quran:
“إِنَّ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ يَهْدِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقْوَمُ وَيُبَشِّرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا كَبِيرًا“
“Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.“
