Hello! My name is Karan! I have a diverse teaching background and a passion for education that I wish to bring to online tutoring. My teaching journey has been enriched by experiences in both high school and college settings. Most recently, I taught mathematics to a cohort of English Language Learner (ELL) students at a public high school in the Houston Independent School District. I worked closely with my students and we saw significant improvements in the STAAR (the State of Texas standard assessment) passing rates for the ELL cluster. I believe that this success was a testament both to my passion for teaching mathematics and to my commitment to fostering a holistic mathematical understanding among my students.
My teaching philosophy revolves around the belief that understanding core concepts deeply is the key to mastering math. I focus on approaching each topic from multiple perspectives, ensuring that students grasp the essential meaning or idea behind a particular mathematical concept, as opposed to learning just a rote algorithmic technique. I incorporate a wide variety of problems and methods to give students a well-rounded grasp of each concept, enabling them to see math as a series of interconnected ideas that build upon each other.
Prior to my high school role, I worked as an adjunct professor of philosophy at Baruch College and Brooklyn College, teaching courses in logic, history of philosophy, aesthetics, and ethics. When COVID required us to transition online, I led four semesters of remote classes via Zoom, developing the skills to engage and connect with students in a virtual environment.
Teaching a wide range of students—from high school learners to college undergraduates (from all kinds of linguistic, national and regional backgrounds)—has led to develop several methods and techniques that can enliven an online classroom. Because let's face it, the hardest thing about learning anything online is that the virtual medium forecloses the possibility of the natural interest that direct contact generates, and making things not seem boring can sometimes be the hardest part.
My goal is to leverage my experience in teaching and use the skills I have developed to help students build strong foundations, gain confidence, and develop the analytical skills they need to excel in math and beyond.
