I am passionate about teaching. I believe that teaching language and literature is a delicate alchemy, a harmonious mixture of analysis and contextualization, necessary to comprehend each literary text. Being a language teacher is an eye-opening experience, an ongoing voyage of discovery that I began ten years ago, and that continues to inspire me in shaping my methods for teaching Italian, incorporating both language and literature.
My goal as a language and literature professor is to provide my students with the intellectual tools to decode a new culture and literature and help them articulate their newly acquired knowledge in Italian. I strive to create a student centered environment, which fosters communication, and I encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning, empowering them by making clear what the learning goals of each class are and how the lesson would unfold to reach such goals. To this end I freely share my lesson plans with my students, often projecting them on the classroom screen.
In my view language is embedded in culture; it is one of the most representative forms of expression of a culture. As an alchemist, I mix in the new literary and cultural topic with my students’ background knowledge, trying to reach a balance in which we learn new forms and structures using authentic literary and artistic creations, in order to understand Italian culture on its own terms, literally in its own language.
