As a civil engineer turned high school math teacher, I get to mix my love for math with the thrill of teaching—kind of like constructing bridges but with more laughs and fewer safety regulations!
In my classroom, math isn’t just about dry equations; it’s an exciting journey. I like to joke that if math were a superhero, it would be "Captain Practical," swooping in to save us from everyday dilemmas—like how many slices of pizza we need for our study group (a critical life skill, for sure!).
Using my engineering background, I make lessons relatable and fun. Whether we’re calculating the angles for a sturdy bridge or estimating how much paint is needed for a giant inflatable duck (true story!), I strive to show that math is both useful and enjoyable.
Teaching brings me so much joy. There’s nothing quite like the look on a student’s face when they finally understand a tricky concept. And I can’t resist throwing in a pun or two—like reminding them that parallel lines have so much in common but will never meet—because who doesn’t love a good math joke?
Ultimately, my mission is to show my students that math can be both practical and entertaining. Who knew the path to engineering greatness could be paved with a few laughs along the way?
Experience
-
mathemathecs teacher (Sep, 2016
–Present) at Carthage Byrsa high school
As a civil engineer with a passion for teaching, my role involves guiding high school students through the fascinating world of mathematics. I draw from my engineering background to make complex concepts relatable and practical. In the classroom, I emphasize problem-solving and critical thinking skills, using real-world examples from civil engineering, such as bridge design and structural analysis.
I strive to create an engaging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring mathematical concepts. By incorporating hands-on projects and collaborative activities, I help students see the relevance of math in their everyday lives and future careers. My goal is to inspire a love for math while preparing them for the challenges ahead, whether they choose to pursue engineering or any other field.
