My name is Dr Muhammad Mominul Islam. I am writing in response to the advertisement for the Assistant Professor in Business Management, at Emirates Aviation University. I am a highly experienced business management lecturer at Global Banking School (a partner institute of Leeds Trinity University). I did my PhD in Management successfully from the University of Reading, UK, one of the top 150 universities in the world. The title of my research was "The factors that impact directors' decision-making behaviour at the board level."
While doing PhD, I did several teaching-related trainings like pedagogy, preparing to teach, marking and providing feedback using the Turnitin assignment, training for students in teaching & supervisory roles etc, which strengthened my teaching skills. I also advised on some dissertation and PhD proposals. These skills and experience prepared me to take undergraduate classes at the University of Reading. I did tutorial classes with different year group students of International Human Resource Management. Once PhD scholarship ran out, I joined the London School of Science and Technology (LSST), Birmingham as a Lecturer in Business in January 2021. LSST is a partner institute of University of West London where I taught four modules, namely Organizational Behavior, Managing People (HRM), Data Handling and Academic Performance and the pass rates were 98%, 86%, 94% and 90%, respectively. In addition to my lecturing and marking role, I ran tutorial sessions. I was a personal tutor for 46 students and acted as a first academic point of contact for students. On 1st September 2021, I joined GBS as a module leader and then level-4 leader, which allowed me to explore more than LSST. As a module leader, I was responsible for designing the module, preparing the lecturing materials, and distributing them to four other colleagues who teach the module under my supervision. I also need to do moderation and standardization. As a level-4 leader, I have the responsibility to manage a team of 10 lecturers. I need to undertake teaching and curriculum development, supporting the college activities, conduct weekly module leader’s meetings, responsible for managing taught programs, including oversight of day-to-day operational processes.
I devoted myself to teaching and supporting students. While with students, I like to help them find the cause and effect of different things that happen around us and impact the business. Like when bringing examples in the class, I use current event examples so that students can get familiar with current affairs. For example, in one of my recent sessions, I talked about the fuel crisis in the UK / Russia-Ukrain war and its impact on supply chain management. I believe the students sitting in the class today will sit in a responsible position tomorrow, and it is my responsibility as a lecturer to show them the right path and prepare for it. I have diverse educational experience from four countries (Bangladesh, South Korea, Japan, and the UK). I came across people of very diverse backgrounds, which now helps me understand students who come to the UK for higher study from around the globe. My own experience as an international student in the UK helps me to understand and engage effectively with students of different backgrounds who may at some point disassociate them from the rest of the class. For example, I always take time to talk to students individually during break time or after the session so that they can bring anything that they could not do during the session. I understand that some students have individual learning needs or even limitations, and as a lecturer, I need to walk a few more steps to fulfil their needs.
Here I need to mention that my PhD title covers corporate decision-making and governance, where I focus on corporate board directors' decision-making strategy which covers broader aspects of behaviour at the board level. However, I am also confident in other business management areas like Supply Chain Management, HRM, CSR, Leadership and Supply China Management etc as these areas were closely related with my research. In 2008, I did a diploma on Hospitality Business Management and worked in Hilton hotel about 11 years which gave me the confidence to teach Hospitality Business Management, Travel and Tourism Business Management. The PhD journey is over and now I focus on starting my career in a highly reputed institution where I will find opportunities for future career development. I believe that joining the Emirates Aviation University will expose me to more opportunities to grow with it and allow tremendous cross-fertilisation of ideas. I have a deep interest in research and publication and plan to publish my PhD thesis and look outside for the topic of my interest. To boost up my research profile, I am supervising some Postgraduate students of University of Bedfordshire and University of Ulster. Recently I submitted two papers for publication. I became a member of the National Governance Association, UK, and the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability which allows me to take the industry trend to my students.
My relevant experience and training in teaching, supervising dissertations, strong research, and experience working with diverse backgrounds professionals and students make me ideal to contribute to your study. I look forward to have a discussion with you. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me should you require any further information.
Yours sincerely, Muhammad Mominul Islam Birmingham, UK
