I am a passionate teacher, never satisfied with cookie-cutter, one size-fits-all approaches to planning and assessment. Teaching begins, for me, with a curiosity about the child infront of me - their needs and their vulnerabilities, because all decisions about planning and assessment must spring from that uniqueness. This is a mighty challenge but my genuine attention to the individual learner is non-negotiable if that child is to achieve their potential.
I am Howick, Auckland born and bred and having received a first rate education at Macleans College and finding myself especially capable in the field of language acquisition, I volunteered during my gap year and taught English to second language speakers. This ignited something and by 2019 I had completed my 120-hour TEFL Certificate from the TEFL Academy, a degree in Languages with English and completed the Secondary Teaching Diploma at the University of Auckland. I was especially grateful for the $10,000 Teaching Scholarship awarded to me by Macleans College.
Teaching at Alfriston College was exciting - I achieved great success in my first year with a decentralized, student-centred approach, encouraging students to be resourceful and curious. My efforts were rewarded with the privilege of a year 13 class in my second year and then an MMA with responsibilities for senior faculty assessment.
I have now moved into Private Tuition and enjoy the flexibility and teacher-to-learner ratios at Cluey Learning and the smaller East Auckland Zion Education which prides itself on supporting the Macleans College community.
Having excelled in Cambridge A
-Level English and loved the papers I completed at University, the teaching of English - both in terms of Literature and Language - has become my driving focus.
My training has sharpened the diversity of pedagogical strategies I have at my disposal but it is the warmth and vigour with which I form teaching relationships and my natural compassion that suits me for a company who place at the very top of their list, the Truth that every child is "amazing". I very much look forward to helping those children prove that truth not just to their assessors but to themselves.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Nga mihi,
Abdulwahhab Dawood.
