I George, mathematics and statistics tutor with over 5 years of experience. I have MSc statistics and a BSc in Mathematics. I am passionate with mathematics, and this has enabled me to bond with students and has enabled my students to excel in mathematics. Mathematical training must leave students ready to solve problems and apply the concepts and skills they have learned. Almost always, I first encourage students to try to solve any problem or example that I will cover in class. Even if nobody has a solution, I ask them to think over it and try to guess at how it should be solved. I give them some hints and guide them through trying again, preferring to give a complete solution only if these two attempts fail. I always encourage my students to ask why certain problems are solved using certain methods, and where do these methods come from. I found through my experience that students will be more interested in the material if the instructor allows them to arrive at the solutions by themselves. Finally, I always show my respect for the students which allows me to gain their respect in return. By
giving serious regard for my students’ feelings, ideas and work, I am able to understand and get to know them better and thus able to give them the appropriate help necessary to learn mathematics. In turn the students respond by working hard, and feel that they can come and seek help from me at any time.
