As a tutor I prioritise ensuring that my students understand the relevant concepts thoroughly rather than training them to mindlessly solve problems. Understanding concepts is critical to applying knowledge in more complex test questions, actually taking away something for future use and for answering questions in which multiple concepts are explored and trains students to have a mind more suited for more advanced topics in further studies.

I do integrate solving problems into my tutoring sessions but I believe that taking time to teach the topics again is a crucial trait of any excellent tutor. Thus I'd say I usually devote around half of my class time teaching the subject matter and questioning my students to test their understanding before getting to solving problems and answering worksheets etc.
