Science in general needs a bit of seeing to appreciate context that's why I like for parents to organize a day or two in the month for their wards to go out and explore areas like museums, science centers of education and the likes to broaden their scope of thinking and understanding.
I am highly selective in the students i pick. not to say I do not pick weak students but rather students who are willing to put in the work and parents who are ready to push these kids to greater heights. In all fairness the last student I picked to tutor improved her scientific reasoning by a mile and those are the kid of dedication I want from my students. Your math is also not a problem at all.
