I would describe myself as a positive, energetic, knowledgeable, and industrious teacher. I have a flexible style of teaching that can cater to all students and abilities. I would also say that I am a high-achieving teacher. For example, in my last role, I managed to turn around an underperforming class
What should be the first and most important quality of a good teacher?
What makes a good teacher?
I have been teaching in high school for a long time. I am a very good teacher, and as part of being a good teacher I know how to manage a classroom.
I think that neither of your choices makes a good teacher. I am not authoritarian and I am not my students' friend.
What makes me a good teacher? I am knowledgeable about the subjects I teach (chemistry, physics, algebra). I keep up with new advances, I read about pedagogy, I take part in professional development activities, and, very importantly, I care about my students. I teach to the students in my classes. Except for my AP class (where I have no control over the curriculum), I set up my curriculum and activities to meet the needs of the class. I listen to their questions and respond to them. I give homework that is appropriate to the class. I don't have a one-size-fits-all style of teaching--I have a variety of teaching methods with which I try to match the ways different students learn.
I expect my students to behave in a polite and respectful manner to everyone in the classroom (both other students and myself), to be engaged in learning, and to take part in class activities. How do I do this? I don't simply "lay down the law" in an authoritarian manner nor do I try to cajole the students. I explain my expectations to the class at the beginning of the year and simply hold them to it. If there is misbehavior, I tell the student immediately that their behavior is not appropriate. If it continues, there are consequences. This is usually sufficient to prevent that student from doing it again.
So to get back to your question: Neither camaraderie nor authority make a good teacher. Knowing your subject matter and caring for students is what works, as well as holding them to appropriate levels of behavior.
