As a mathematics lecturer, I place a high value on developing conceptual understanding through concise explanations, active student participation, a variety of representations (visuals, real-world applications), encouraging discussion, asking meaningful questions, and offering lots of practice opportunities. All the while adjusting the method to the needs of the students and anticipating any problems.
Conceptual Understanding:
I will Explain "why" not just "how": Focus on the underlying logic and reasoning behind mathematical concepts, not just memorizing formulas.
Multiple representations:
I will use visuals like diagrams, graphs, manipulatives, and real-world examples to connect abstract concepts to concrete situations.
Analogies and connections:
I will Draw parallels between new concepts and previously learned material to facilitate understanding.
Interactive questioning:
I will Pose open-ended questions that encourage critical thinking and discussion. Group work and collaboration:
I will Facilitate peer-to-peer learning through collaborative problem-solving activities.
Think-pair-share:
I will allow students to individually reflect on a problem, then discuss with a partner before sharing with the class.
Problem-solving emphasis:
I will Provide structured practice problems with increasing complexity, offering scaffolding and feedback.
Variety of problems:
I will share the problems to my students that Include application-based problems, word problems, and multi-step challenges as well.
