The first thing I teach a child when they come to me is how to perform ablution (wudu) correctly. I start their teachings after they are proficient in it, emphasizing on the first lesson of the Qaida (the foundational book of Islam). I make sure they fully grasp the first lesson before continuing. In order to encourage the child to pray, I gradually begin teaching them the correct sequence for Salah (prayer) in addition to their lessons. They will have made it a habit to offer Salah by the time they finish the Quran. To ensure that every time they recite, it provides peacefulness to both the reciter and the listener, furthermore I teach them appropriate Quranic recitation (Qir'at) once a week. Aside from that, I teach the child how to converse politely with elders and encourage them to treat their parents with love and with manners, highlighting the benefits of doing so.
