I believe in a 1 on 1 encounter with my students. Here, we both get acquainted with each other and learn how the other operates. This, I believe, would make the lessons go more smoothly than moving forward.
I like to ask a lot of question to make sure that my student understands the content early on, and does not get confused. If there is anything to clarify, I urge my students to voice it out so as to ensure better understanding moving forward.
The most important quality in a student is their willingness to learn new things and from their mistakes. Regardless of how weak they may be in a particular subject, it can be overcome if they are willing to work with me.
