Experience
Head of outdoors (Jun, 2019–Nov, 2020) at UWC Dilijan
I took on this exciting and challenging role to work with students who came from over 60 countries around the world to study on the IB programme in Armenia. My position was to run a full range of outdoor activities and educational visits to complement and support the academic programme. This included managing induction and country-wide project week residentials, a Summer programme of climbing, cycling, mountaineering and bushcraft and a winter programme of downhill and cross country skiing and snowshoeing. I also worked on developing operating procedures to meet international standards and wrote route guides for hikes throughout the country. The opportunity to work with young people from across the world was inspiring and an honour. The experience was very disappointingly curtailed due to the global pandemic.
Lead lecturer (Aug, 2010–Jun, 2019) at Askham Bryan College
I taught on the Level 2 & 3 courses as part of a team of very experienced and active practitioners, able to offer the students top quality classroom based and outdoors learning opportunities, with some excellent residentials & training days in a wide range of activities. I was the lead member of staff for Bushcraft and Mountain Skills as well as inspecting outdoor activities providers across the country as to their suitability for work placement provision. I was fortunate enough to work on both the York and Cumbrian sites, and I organised and led outdoor activities, residentials and expeditions across the UK and abroad to locations including the Alps, Italy and Iceland.
Lecturer (Aug, 2004–Jun, 2006) at Bishop Burton college
I was employed for six years as a P/T lecturer on the HE programmes run at the college by Leeds Metropolitan University, mainly the foundation and degree in Adventure Management, where I was responsible for the Expedition Skills, Outdoor Development, Centre Management and Adventure Tourism Modules. Through the course of the five years I managed a number of successful outside training & visits including climbing and expeditioning in the Lake District, Peak District, Dales and North Yorkshire Moors.
