Humor
If it’s well-meant I just love it when they make jokes. They make me laugh a lot, and they know I appreciate humor, so they put jokes in their homework as well.
Honesty and respectful directness
If a student tells me he’s bored during the less and can explain why he is bored and looks for a serious alternative. If they come up with something good, I almost shake their hand. Sometimes I do.
Any sign of making an effort
Any time I notice them making an effort to understand something or to do a task well or when they try to tell me something in English or Dutch.
Being nice to each other
I love it when I see students support each other.
When they don’t leave my class at the end of the lesson
Some of my students come to me after the lesson and just stay to chat. Since we we talk in English they are still learning, and we can just have normal conversations about any stuff they like.
When they teach me
My students teach me a lot, I learn something new every day thanks to them. They show me what’s hot online, they show me new digital trends, they show how youth culture is evolving, they teach me Slovak, etc.
I can’t be bribed, but hey, I’m only human, I like presents
Yesterday one of my students bought me a bag of patato chips. Nice! I happened to be quite hungry…
When we put our heads together to pull off a ‘cunning plan’
Quite recently we collected some money and bought a bunch of flowers for a teacher the students are particularly fond of. They all wrote little cards to congratulate the teacher and they were so adorable. They were doing their very best to write an impeccable message to one of their favorite teachers. When they came back from bringing her the flowers they were walking in a rosy daze. Fun!
When I see them make progress
At the beginning of the school year some are shy and reluctant to say anything in English and then after some weeks they get past this and they talk to you in English even during the breaks. I’m not saying this gives me tears in my eyes, but it’s a feeling quite close to it.
Seeing their potential and their uniqueness
They are so obviously talented. Some have a talent for comedy, some for painting, some will become architects or engineers, some are so good at argumentation that they could become lawyers, some are musicians, some will become nurses or welders or teachers themselves. They are still young, and they don’t know how far they can go, but you feel it, they have something, all of them, and you just hope that they will realize it and use their gifts.
