I have always been committed to teaching at any level as it gives me an opportunity to learn more and broaden my horizon. My interest in teaching started at Western Kentucky University (USA) where I taught at a Juvenile Detention Center for two years (every Saturday). Thereafter, I got few opportunities to teach undergraduate and graduate students at Florida International University as a teaching assistant. Human genomics is an emerging and interdisciplinary field. It requires a comprehensive understanding of human genetics, genetic epidemiology, bioinformatics and R or python for data science. Thus, it creates more challenges in research as well as in teaching.
I believe active engagement in learning and teaching is conducive for critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Learning is an active process and as a teacher my aim is to guide this process, by providing essential information so that students can gain knowledge independently and utilize it for novel hypothesis, learn ideas in new situations. Critical thinking and intellectual growth are absolutely necessary for anyone. A good teacher is not someone who gives the answers out to their students but is understanding of their needs and challenges and gives tools to help them succeed. I do not believe just teaching from the book, but share my real research experiences with my students. In lectures, I utilize power point presentations, videos (if available), using real published data and bioinformatics tools to make more sense.
I feel active participation of students in the class is essential. After each class, I prefer to give an article or home work which is relevant to next class and that will be the discussion of next class. Apart from group discussion, I also believe that students should be able to see pros and cons of a research article. At the time of globalization, there are several online classes available from reputed universities. I also provide this information to my students and ask them to actively attend those classes. As a genetic epidemiologist, I understand that data science is an essential part of my research. Thus, R and python (free software package for data analysis) is also an important part of my lectures, specifically related to genomics studies.
Apart from classroom teaching, I have also guided several high school, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral candidates in genomics studies. Most of these students were from different countries. Thus, I have been exposed to different cultures, environments, and pressures of teaching. My scientific presentations at international level (USA and Europe) speak volumes for research productivity and commitment to share, which also underlies my teaching philosophy. While I was not able to teach as much as I wished due to holding research positions at The Ohio State University and Florida International University, I satisfied my appetite for teaching by presenting in lab and departmental seminars. These presentations were mostly based on genetics/immunogenetics, genomics, genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics. I have given talks in a number of international conferences, as an invited speaker, departmental seminars and immunogenetics clubs. All of these could only be achieved as a team player with non-selfish behaviour and working in harmony with others. I am confident that students will like my classes and will definitley be able to hone their skills in their specific fields.
