My ambition has always been one day to become a Teacher. This burning desire to teach is borne out of the passion I have for the teaching profession and the joy that comes from seeing lives being molded. And this has always been a combination of how I desire to teach and my motivation to be a lifelong teacher and learner. Since infancy, I have been intrigued as to how anything I came into contact with worked; however, the explanations I received were always either too vague or beyond my knowledge at the time, I have come to realize that the keyword for all my questions was Physics, where the most complex phenomena of the universe can be explained by fitting small pieces of the puzzle into a structured theory. My passion for Mathematics is another factor in my choice of Engineering as a degree course of study. I find complex problems in both physics and mathematics very challenging, and this enables me to embrace Engineering as more than simply a major or a degree, but as a personal passionate. In the course of my teaching Physics and Mathematics at different schools in Nigeria, and presently at Edgewood College Lekki phase 1, Lagos, I identified some critical areas that are paramount to my success in the classroom, one of which is creating a conducive student-learning environment. As a teacher, I have always been responsible for establishing a successful student-learning environment, one that values and enables learning for both students and teacher. I honestly believe that students are responsible for their own learning because the greatest learning occurs when students take responsibility for determining what they learn, learn what is personally beneficial, earn what they discover for themselves and learn from both experience and feedback instead of just experience alone. I also created a classroom climate that is safe, professional, and collaborative, allowing students to feel at ease to express their views, share experiences, and discuss differences of opinion without any form of domination. I also facilitated effectively to integrate students’ experiences into our discussions and used those examples to illustrate relevant teaching points. I ensured that I provide enough tools and information to solve problems. My teaching has always been student-centered which helps to explore all the domains of learning: cognitive, affective and psychomotor. Again, my primary role as a facilitator demands flexibility which involves the ability to diagnose a learning-related societal problem and intervene when necessary. This enhances learning, supports individual and promote society growth. Besides, being my original self is extremely important for me as a teacher. Being genuine and modelling trust can significantly help establish a successful learning environment and maintain a better society. Of a truth, I am a model. My students look up to me. They imitate me. I must be my true self! Finally, my burning desire has always been that my students achieve all-round success in their academic pursuit and in real life.
