I believe that everybody looks down on everyone else in the world. When they see people on the subway on the way to work, on the sidewalk as they pass by, they mostly think nothing of the people they see. Simply glassy eyed automatons going about their daily lives, never stopping to think.
Well, the funny part is everybody seems to have this outlook on all of the anonymous people they see, you think it about them, and they think the same about you. Living their lives thinking that they are the only conscious humans in a world of sheep. With this outlook on people as lesser than you are, you have no problem stepping on them. Now that’s not to say I am not at fault with this time and time again.
While I like to think of myself as rational and intelligent as I should be, this is not always the case, I am many times, despite my efforts, just like the rest of the crowd. I am definitely among the people who think and act these things from time to time, comfortable with the idea that I am far superior to all I see around me. When in truth, there are many around me who dwarf my intelligence in many areas where I struggle. For all I know, I could be assuming the Einstein’s of the world are mediocre and inferior, where it is quite the opposite.
Although this is not to say you should go out of your way to edit your thoughts to exclude those around you, just to keep in mind that they are people, like you, and deserve to be treated that way. In an attempt at breaking away from the crowd, I try to believe that others around me are adept and logical, at least to the point of common sense, and have a small amount of faith in humanity. After giving this some thought, I have decided to look on people with respect, and not with contempt. Although I may not always succeed in this goal, I will give it my best shot. Just like everyone else, I am flawed, but I am making an attempt to be a good person.
