The past four years have been a valuable learning experience for me as a teacher. I have
gained a lot of knowledge and skills from the courses and projects that I have completed at the
Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
I was given ample opportunity and exposure to apply what I have learned at university in real
classroom settings. I have completed several teaching practice sessions at different schools,
where I observed experienced teachers, planned, and taught lessons, managed the classroom,
and interacted with students, colleagues, and parents. There, I received guidance from my
mentors and supervisors, who helped me reflect on my strengths and areas for improvement.
During this time, I learned how to establish clear rules and expectations for the students and
enforce them consistently and fairly to strengthen my classroom management skills. I have also
learned how to foster a positive and collaborative learning environment in my classroom, where
the students feel safe and respected. Additionally, I learned how to communicate effectively with
my colleagues, students, and parents.
It is noticeable how much more confidence and competence in my teaching profession I have
developed. Challenges that were once daunting during my teaching practices have become
manageable and less stressful.
I use different ways of teaching and learning that worked well for the topic, the situation, and
the learners, and improved their learning outcomes. By incorporating culturally responsive
teaching strategies, like multimodal learning which uses modes of communication and
expression, I am able to make lessons more inclusive and relevant for my students.
Aside from multimodality, I use creative methods in my teaching approach to make my lessons
more engaging and beneficial for my students. I involved my students in the learning process
and assess their comprehension with interactive learning strategies. I also deepen their
understanding and help them apply their knowledge with blended learning methods that
involve discussions and activities.
