Hello there,
About learning my experience tells that approach should start with overview and few questions like why, what and how. Next step should be to understand concept behind anything and then we should dive in to the detailing for ex: syntax, built in features, scope, border conditions etc.
Although mentioned above is standard practice of way of learning depending on learner teacher must consider grasping level of student his/her strong/week points and decide accordingly. It can happen if learner and instructor has interactive discussion and friendly environment.
Also while learning it should relate to real life example which makes life easier.

Happy Learning!

Regards,
Amit Muley
