LECTURES :
1.Introduction (9hours)
Industrial activity in the country– Guidelines for siting of industries and industrial estates – characteristics of industrial wastewater – differences between industrial wastes and domestic sewage – domestic wastewater treatment flow sheet and its description.
2.Impact of Industrial Effluents (9hours)
Impact of industrial wastes on environment – impact of acids and alkalies, suspended and colloidal matter, organic matter (BOD), refractory organics, coloured matter, inorganic solids, heavy metals, foaming agents (detergents), nutrients, oil and greases, biological (pathogenic) wastes, thermal waters and nuclear wastes on the environment - Industrial waste regulations – industrial wastewater disposal practices – general standards for discharge of industrial effluents into inland surface wastes, public sewers, marine environment.
3.Theories of Industrial Pollution & Control (9 hours)
Outlines of general treatment methods – Pretreatment methods – temperature and pH corrections, nutrient additions, flow equalization and proportioning, screens and grit chambers, oil and grease trap. Physical methods – Sedimentation dissolved air flotation, filtration, adsorption evaporation, distillation and condensation, air stripping, reverse osmosis, centrifugation. Chemical Methods – Solubility, neutralization, precipitation coagulation and flocculation, oxidation and reduction ion exchange, disinfection. Biological methods – process fundamentals – anaerobic and aerobic biological treatment processes – activated sludge processes, plastic media filters, rotating biological contactor, oxidation ditch, aerated lagoons, oxidation ponds, anaerobic ponds, advanced anaerobic reactions, UASB,etc.
4.Management of Major Industrial Effluent (9 hours)
Outlines of manufacturing processes, sources, volumes, characteristics and treatment processes of major industries – sugarcane, distillery, chrome plating, tannery, pulp and paper mills, cotton dyeing mills, food processing industries, edible oil industries, ceramic tile industry and detergent industry.
5.Waste Minimization & Sludge Handling (9hours)
Industrial waste minimization practices – managing inventory – modifying production processes – reducing waste volume, recovering waste, zero discharge concept - Management of industrial sludges – sources of production of industrial sludges – land disposal, incineration, controlled land filling and utilization in cement and building materials, wastewater reclamation and reuse.
