Asking guiding questions and getting to the root of what exactly the student doesn't understand is really important. So is getting yourself down to the student’s level. Remember that just because something is obvious to you, it might still be hard for someone else to get it. If a student gets frustrated and thinks that they just can't be good at math remind them that when they first starting learning to read it was probably hard too
