My preferred teaching style is chalk and talk, however it is only useful in short bursts. You need to be able to vary your style to fit in with the majority of your students in individual classes, as chalk and talk ( the lecture style) is more effective for older students with longer concentration spans, where a more varied style that encompasses group learning, flexible learning and mixed- ability learning, is more effective with younger High School students. Giving students choice, structuring tasks for different abilities and having discussions and group work appeals to Middle School pupils and caters for the shorter focus of the age group. I often gave students one of the Learning style diagnostic tests when I first took a class, and used the results to structure tasks to suit the majority of students. The lecture style of teaching allows more control, however, it does not suit all students or teachers. Go with what you are most comfortable with, as if you are relaxed and seem to be enjoying the class.
