Student centered! I adapted my teaching to meet the needs of individual students, and it worked 99% of the time.

I mainly used to talk to them. You might call them pep talks, but they were more encouragement and telling them what steps they could take to do better. Every year, after the first quarter my numbers on tests were something like this A’s 50%, B’s 30%, C’s 15%, D’s 4%, and F’s 1%.

I had competitions between classes. The class with the most A’s plus every student in the other classes with an A would win a prize. I was not wealthy (I was a teacher) so I had to give prizes that were no cost to me yet appealing to the students. Their favorite prize was when I would type up all of the notes for the next unit and copy them for them. Then they didn’t have to take notes. Other prizes might be: no homework for the next unit, an automatic A on the next quiz, and other things like that.

I also wrote on the board the statistics for each class as in how many A’s etc. (no student names)

The students would encourage and quiz each other because they really cared how other students did ( maybe for selfish reasons), but they still cared.

One of the most telling events that told me this was successful was one day when a boy asked to talk to me after school. He had made as F (as usual) on the previous test. It had been an easier than usual tests with only one F and no D’s and a smattering of C’s. He looked at that and asked me if it was really true that he was the only one who made an F. I told him that is was true, and he said something to the effect of, I am smarter than that! I told him that I knew he was. The next test he had a B and after that A’s the rest of the year!

Find out what your students care about and use it to motivate them. I did the same thing with discipline!
