As a teacher, I always long to make my learners own the space. By this, their participation should not just be a passing cloud but what builds them to new concepts and ideas. I always believe that all learners bring unique talents to a language class and it is the work of the teacher to nurture them. Building a learner-centered classroom with the consciousness of individual differences can bring out the best in all the students. This is never an overnight venture. Motivation to participate and align the content in such a model is what brings out the best teaching experience as per my school of thought.
Building desirable knowledge, skills, and attitudes is what should always define me as a teacher to my beloved students. That said, constant motivation is key to building a holistic classroom. Does it come easy? Of course not. The teacher must act as an active shepherd who is constantly putting the flock in balance and shape. The model can be set but implementation is critical in many aspects. I can say it might sound easy as I type this but deliberate work must be put in place. As a teacher, I must always plan the activities and give a fair and precise breakdown of what I want learners to do. Initially, there a those who might not be so cooperative. Making it fun plays a big role in modeling the activities. It might sound like selling ice cream but it needs extreme measures in building confidence in teenagers who can easily feel less confident at times.
