Prof Sixtus Mwea was a lecturer at the University of Nairobi (UoN) for 36 years. During his tenure, he rose from Tutorial Fellow to Professor. He teaches geotechnical and foundation engineering an area of civil engineering he is passionate. He conducts his lectures by PowerPoint notes which are available to the students at the beginning of the course. He conducts worked example sessions to enable the students to grasp the taught subject. He gives industrial experience examples from his wide interaction with industry as can be seen below. This has been found to interest the students.
Prof Mwea has guided undergraduate students in their final-year dissertations every academic year. Additionally, he has supervised 4 PhD students and 40 Master of Science (MSc) students. He has over 30 co-authored journal articles.
Prof Mwea has been involved in the design and contract supervision of substructures and superstructures of bridges and building structures. He has worked on various design assignments, including geotechnical investigations, preliminary and detailed design preparation, and bid documents.
He has extensive experience working as a technical auditor with donor-funded projects with the European Union (EU) and World Bank in Kenya and Sierra Leone.

He also served as the Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department for seven years. He also served as Acting Dean and Principal for various occasions. Facilitated collaboration between UoN and Taiwan University of Science and Technology, which enabled UoN graduates to be enrolled for PhD and MSc. He supervised many MSc and PhD students to completion.
