I always embark upon strengthening the fundamental concepts rather than direct teaching of formulas and designs because, I believe students should be able to retain the knowledge conceived till the life ends.
I always start the course with pre requisites to understand all the concepts. Once the pre requisites are done, I slowly get into the fundamental concepts followed by design principles, real life examples and numerical problems wherever applicable.
Closure of the course is equally important as the student needs to understand where exactly he can apply the concepts in practical life.
Ultimately, my focus is always to make the student think about the "what if" questions about the concepts so that he or she can answer any question under the sun during examination.
