I have over 35 years teaching experience (15 years as an Academic Coordinator/Advisor): 24 years obtained in Indonesia, 7 years in the U.S. more than 4 in China and 1 month in Nepal. Moreover, I have taught students at the pre-K, primary, secondary, tertiary, and corporate level.

In addition, I have taught students at the Longpanhu-Yichang International School (grades 5-12), the Pa Hoa Chinese Academy (pre-school, kindergarten, and grades 1, 7, and 10), the Jakarta International Korean School (grades 7-11). Moreover, I have instructed students through the medium of Indonesian, Spanish, and Mandarin (as to the last, both written and spoken, but only to a limited degree).

In addition, during my 23-year sojourn in Indonesia I have worked as a translator of Indonesian to English for Garuda Magazine, the in-flight magazine for the national carrier of Indonesia, Keerom Regency’s 2007 investment portfolio booklet, the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Business Management and Economics’ Graduate and Post-Graduate brochures, and Pa Hoa Chinese Academy’s 2010 calendar of Confucian sayings. Furthermore, I acted in Indonesian movies (Kutunggu Jandamu, Rumah Maida, etc.), TV series (Deru Debu), and TV commercials (Star Mild), and co-hosted for 12 years an English language program (The Listening Post) on Radio Sonora and made guest appearances on another (MS Tri FM) from 1994-95.

As to my education, I possess an MA in Linguistics with a specialization in TESOL (1988; GPA: 3.84) from Oakland University in Rochester, MI, and a BA in Psychology with High Distinction (1981; GPA: 3.88) from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Furthermore, during the time that I was a full-time undergraduate and graduate student, I worked full-time as well.

The languages I have studied are Spanish, Indonesian, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, Burmese, Javanese, Sundanese, Sasak, Batak, Buginese, Tator (the last four I created glossaries on with the help of a native speaker of each) and Mandarin (all Asian languages studied independently.)

As a person, my employers, colleagues, and students find me friendly, helpful, amusing, and cheerful. Regarding my habits, I bicycle for several hours daily, and enjoy reading history, cultural anthropology, political science, philosophy, world literature, historical linguistics, environmental science, and medical science.
