I am currently a senior student in the LAHS club. Chess has always been a favorite pastime for me, as I have practiced it for almost 7 years at this point. I‘ve also played chess competitively for several years in tournaments. Nowadays, I play mostly online games and am capable enough to consistently beat titled masters rated around 2400. My goal in teaching is to bring more awareness to chess and spread the same sense of enjoyment and opportunity to my students. My teaching style consists mainly of providing tactics and essential principles of chess for my students to work on, as well as going over some top games played by masters as case studies. One peer I tutored in my chess club has managed to excel in my teaching and has improved his rating from 1000 to almost 1350 in the last year just by attending my lessons. As a chess teacher, my goal is to improve the overall quality in my student’s play, while at the same time reinforcing my lessons through practical games and tactical experience.
Experience
-
Assistant Coach (Jul, 2022
–Aug, 2022) at Bay Area Chess
I have had experience teaching chess to lower rated students, and have volunteered at BAC for over 100 hours. As such, I have acquired much experience working with students and those who aspire to improve their chess skill. My main focus in teaching is to help students learn through tactics and games, while trying to provide them the most entertainment through fun chess puzzles I come up with.
-
Team lead (Aug, 2020
–Present) at Los Altos High School Chess Club
I often help tutor the LAHS chess club and teach the less experienced players general openings and tactics. I have also led a tournament win in which my club received an undisputed 1st place out of 15 schools in Bay Area.
