Being a teacher myself I have experienced that teaching methods need constant upgradation as world is now focussing on the practical knowledge than the standard book learning. Innovation in Geography is crucial and integral with the inclusion of GIS and Remote Sensing in curriculum. I have the vision that one day geographers take a lead in Geospatial Technology and for that making them GIS software savvy will be my key agenda, because engineers are invading this area more than the geographers. Field visits and using of the GPS will be one more crucial aspect of my teaching. I teach Sociology because I had that as my State pcs optional subject. I am well versed with sociology curriculum of classes 11th and 12th.
I did my masters dissertation under Late Dr. R.B.Singh (Vice-President International Geophysical Union) on particulate matter 2.5 and 10 and it's effect on children under the age five with respect to chronic obstructive Pulmonary disease. I feel this is my most significant research as it talks about the Vulnerability of the age group 35-60 to air pollution caused by the increasing presence of Particulate Matter in the atmosphere due to construction activties, stubble burning, vehicular emissions.etc. And the children under the age of 5 are very prone to Ashtma and Bronchitis. And we can see the same problem is occuring in NCR.
In the next five years, I would like to research on cities growth with respect to migrants who were forced to leave their homes due to disasters like Terrorism or pandemic. I would like students to develop a temper to write papers on such topics they find relevant and are linked to development of our department. I want GIS and AUTOCAD to be compulsory taught to all the students because they are the torch bearers of urban development and expertise in these tools will give them an edge over others.
In the next five years, geography department's mission would be to produce fine scholars with important contributiuon towards research and findings. To produce more NET and JRF qualified students, they should have an urge to join public service departments like the Meteorological sciences (IMD) or like the regional planning institutes after their Masters. A huge motivation should come in their hearts to work towards community and their issues like water, pollution, soil, farming and I strongly believe that Planetorium type documentaries should be telecasted weekly as it imbibes several learnings and points than textbooks could. Geographical tools like GIS can be used in medical geography For Ex - locating the Covid- 19 hotspots in a particular area and it can stop the spread of such diseases any further. I also want Interdisciplinary Knowledge to be inculcated in Geography like my dissertation was under DRr. R.B. Singh in the subtopic of Medical Geography. So, students can explore relatively less touched areas of Geography, keeping in mind that Urban studies, Migration studies, Develpment studies, global affairs, conflict management, disaster management, public health and of course the Core Geography- Physical and Human: both require a lot of Graduates and Postgraduates in Geography.
I was the chief Editor of Geography magazine of department of geography, Miranda House,DU. I was the treasurer of the same department. I created a dramatics society DHARA- under MH VATAVARAN SOCIETY of Miranda house under which I wrote and directed a play VASUNDHRA KI VYATHA and won the First prize in CMS 7TH ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL at IGNCA LAWNS, New Delhi. I won the prestigious DS Kothari award foe EARTH SCEINCES at Miranda House in 2013. I was in the union of Delhi School of Economics and i PERFORMED kATHAK at the Annual Day of Delhi School of Economics,DU in front of Deputy Governor of RBI. I have done trainings and hands on parctices with TERI, JSS MYSORE and Symbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics on a lot of topics related to Geography and Environment and from IIRS. i HAVE SUBMITTED THESIS in PGDUEML DEGREE FROM NLU DELHI on Managing disasters with particular reference to Himalayan region.
