My name is Yinebeb, medical physiologist by profession. The old style of teaching is one way, which means, students repeat what teachers said. This way of teaching help students just to recall. For students to comprehend, engage actively in the teaching process and put higher level of thinking, we need to modify the teaching learning process. The active teaching learning process is the way to achieve this goal.
I have a vast teaching experience for both small group learning and large group learning helping my students to participate or involve actively in the teaching learning process.
For medical and other health related students, the teaching approach should be an integrated approach, i.e., students should integrate biomedical science with the clinical science side by side from the beginning until they graduate. The old curriculum was designed in such a way that medical students learn biomedical sciences in their first 2-3 years of school life and then they start clinical courses. This way of teaching did not help students to integrate the two wings (biomedical and clinical) courses together. Because, by the time they start the clinical courses, students will forget the biomedical courses. Rather, if we can be able to integrate the two courses together from the beginning until the end of their study life, they can easily integrate the biomedical with the clinical courses.
The other thing that we should not forget is problem-based learning (PBL) cases. Based on the level of understanding of students, we need to develop PBL cases for each class starting from day 1 of their class to familiarize students with the realistic scenario.
Generally, I have vast experience (more than 10 years) in active learning process, integrated way of teaching, PBL case development and PBL based teaching.
I am a senior lecturer in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a country of over 80 different ethnic background. In the university as a lecturer, I meet students from all ethnic backgrounds since universities in Ethiopia are federal governmental organizations. The reason I brought this story in this conversation is to clarify that I have the experience of teaching/handling students from different background. This experience will help me to manage different ideas and cultures coming from students from different ethnic background.
The diversity is not only ethnic based, but there are also differences in gender wise. I have also enough teaching experience in large group and small group discussions with my students regardless of their sex, color, etc..
