The objective of teaching philosophy involves an upgradation and establishment of thinking, reasoning and acting skills in everyday life. Furthermore, education in philosophy contributes to the refinement of students’ intellectual, spiritual and moral soul and substance. As an academic discipline, philosophy inculcates analytic thinking in students and confronts them to existent issues and unparalleled assortment of philosophical themes.
Teaching, philosophy, I believe, must involve a process of mutual and interactive learning. An innovative environment for learning could be created by firstly by introducing flexibility and investigation-based learning in classrooms. Another stride towards developing an innovative learning environment could be achieved by fostering creativity and expressiveness in the teaching-learning process. Furthermore, as philosophy is a field that requires intense engagement, mindfulness and active deliberation, therefore, I shall aim at fabricating the classroom conditions by being responsive and responsible towards the individual ideas, needs, values and preferences of the students. My philosophy of teaching orbits around 5 cardinal roadmaps: to prioritize, practice, respond, reflect and rectify.
The subjects I have taught and am teaching include Ethics, Applied Ethics, Professional Ethics, Logic, Art and Film Appreciation, Social Philosophy, Indian Philosophy, Value Theory, Greek Philosophy, Feminism etc. The teaching methods I promote are the Socratic method, demonstration, enriched interactional learning, student-centred learning, and the most important of all, flex learning. I believe, teaching-learning must not stay restricted to the walls of classrooms and libraries, it rather, must include application of all the learnings to real life through reasoning, critical thinking and reflection.
As far as the application of Philosophical fields like Ethics and Moral Philosophy to the domain of information and technology, communication, business and management is concerned, I believe, this acts as an effective and exceptional tool for promoting righteousness, fairness, trustworthiness, accountability and integrity in the respective domains. The importance of professional ethics and applied ethics extends beyond simply operating within the boundaries of the law; it plays a cardinal role in founding and sustaining a work structure that orbits around values and ethical principles. Teaching ethics in the realm of IT, business and management studies, motivates individuals and companies to carry out work the right way; a way that focuses on ethical and social obligations, responsibility and well-being. Thus, by teaching ethics and policy studies, I intend to help students build the right character and virtue, broaden their reasoning capability, realise the value of inclusivity and sensitivity, and most important of all, incorporate ethical approach in life with care and patience. Thus, my desire to engage, challenge, and inspire growth in my students is not limited to the classroom.
In simple words, my central focus would be to make a transference from the conventional passive mechanism of learning of learning to a more active learning exercise. I believe, just clearing the interview questions is not enough to be a teacher. Teaching requires proper abstractions of concepts, introducing them, explaining them and furthermore, expanding them.
Finally, it is critical to note that academic events such as seminars, conferences and workshops are a priority to me, and I hope to continue taking interest in organising them in future. I hold myself to the same standards that I hold my students. That is, I strive to become a skilled thinker and learner, and I believe that this process is life-long.
