Mauri HallEconometrics, Economics
No reviews yet
I have many years tutoring and teaching Economics, Statistics and Econometrics since I worked as a tutor and lecturer at York University during my doctoral studies. I have a PhD in financial economics focusing on econometrics and specifically time series modelling of cryptocurrencies.
My goal as an educator is two fold. I want students to perform well on their exams and I want long term retention of the concepts under consideration. In economic terms my first aim is to help the students achieve their first best choice in terms of grades, my second is the creation of human capital.
When I teach I seek to present material so that it sparks students' natural curiosity. Whenever possible I link theoretical concepts with tangible experience. For example, when I teach multivariate calculus I introduce optimization by displaying three dimensional graphical representations of problems during lecture which I can then rotate and display from many angles.
My teaching philosophy is centered on student empowerment and engagement. I think of lectures as a dialogue and view teaching as similar to sports coaching. Students hone their abilities far more effectively by doing than by absorbing explanations alone. For quantitative material in particular, I encourage students to work problems in short bursts but on a regular basis. I likened it to training for a marathon where the only path to success entails regular practice.
