I have good approaching a problem. Have 2,3, 5, even 10 different ways to explain what precisely is meant by the term "derivative" or "amplitude," etc. so they can better understand the motives behind a formula. Students come to tutoring because they don't understand their teacher's examples; give them as many different examples and explanations as it takes for something to click. In this process, your knowledge of the subject will get much deeper as well.
guide a student through the solution process, not just show how it's done. Ask the student leading questions that will direct him or her to discover the correct steps. Avoid doing problems for the student.
