I think every student is different, everyone has their own unique way of learning and this path of learning should never be judged with the time taken. As in most of the cases the subjects we study are internally linked, means one concept can be understood by the realization of other, many a times students learn more than one concept while clearing another. So time consumed for better understanding may have it's own reasons.
With my 15 years of experience I know how to playfully introduce the toughest concepts and through solving a lot of problems with constant participation from my part as well I had seen students shine. Practice is the key, if a limited number of selected problems can be practiced everyday that is more than enough to crack any exam, cause it is only the pattern of the problems is of importance. Once that is known the rest of the thing is to make sure the student has speed and accuracy.
I taught quite a few students ranging from AS and A levels to Olympiad to Engineering Physics. Most of them did well in their endeavors. I think that shall continue with any new comer as well.
