The ultimate goal of students is to be competent physicians, and for this, they need to have a strong foundation of knowledge as well as skills. While knowledge of basic sciences gradually fades during time Skills doesn’t, and this is my primary focus in teaching; adoption of several related strategies which will benefit student careers, as they gain better self-directed learning skills, communication skills, and decision-making abilities.
I always make sure to choose an appropriate teaching method and familiarize myself with the topic so I am fully equipped to answer questions the students may have. I am enthusiastic and able to keep students engaged throughout the lecture, by relating the topic to everyday examples to which the students could readily relate. I have found have that students within Pharmacy do relate well to everyday examples (discussing the procedure for making a cup of coffee in Starbucks and applying this to SOPs in pharmaceutical industry).
Engagement is also encouraged by asking questions throughout the session and seeking student feedback, and recapping the key points. My main focus in teaching is to ensure that learners gained knowledge and understanding in the topic of interest, and to capture student interest while meeting their expectations. I often use a variety of teaching methods in appreciation of the individuality of the students. Visual aids and videos can be an important component of teaching in the health sciences. For my power-point presentations, I rely on those visual materials, and make sure to minimize words on text slides, use simple fonts in colours that contrast to a plain background. I always include a reflection slide at the end of lectures to help consolidate learning, which was useful to summarize students learning goals and build their confidence. According to student’s feedback, lectures were enjoyable and beneficial. I believe that every student deserves to be heard and understood. To create an inclusive learning environment, I make sure my students know they can come to me with any questions or concerns. I also encourage them to share their opinions and ideas during class discussions. I find that when students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, it leads to more productive conversations.
