    This course aims to introduce participants to the discipline of politics as an object of study through the presentation and discussion of key concepts and themes. Studying politics and related issues of government and governance is essential for understanding how society operates, how resources are allocated (who gets what, when, where, how, and why), and what power is and how it is exercised. The lectures will progress from general questions on the nature and scope of politics, exploring the state as a central locus of political activity, to considering the relationships between various political structures. This includes key political themes and issues such as the state, sovereignty, nationalism, ideology, political and electoral institutions, democratic governance and representation, constitutions and constitutionalism, political parties and interest groups, and the role of citizens.

These are just a few of the questions that participants in this course will address in this introduction to peace and conflict studies. participant will learn about the significance of the field, the causes of conflict at both individual and group levels, civil war, and the reasons why states engage in warfare.

    Why Democracies Develop and Decline ? “What conditions make democracy possible and what conditions make it thrive?” The study of democracy and democratization has a long history in Comparative Politics. Interest in this topic has expanded dramatically with “The Third Wave of Democratization” that has swept much of Latin America, Southern Europe, East Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union during the past three decades. However, the “third wave” of democratization has stalled in the recent years and half of democratic governments around the world are in decline.
    This module focuses on how these questions have been addressed in the comparative politics literature.
