One of the things I miss most about Minna is the Ta'aleem (Knowledge Circle) led by Mal. Umar Sheu, particularly his Qur'ān/Tajweed class. In the Qur'ān class, we delved into the Tajweed analysis of the entire Qur'ān, from Fatha to Naas, using the Riwaayatu Hafs.
The teaching method we use today at AQOC in teaching Tajweedical analysis of the Qur'ān was inspired by Mal. Umar Sheu's class. I pray that Allah continues to bless him.
Apart from the main Qur'ān class, I also benefited from personal lessons with two of Mal. Umar Sheu's direct students - Mal. Mohammed Bilyaminu Safiyanu and Engineer Abdus-salaam Babaniyan. The excellent teaching style, discipline, and other qualities that are now part of AQOC were inherited from them. May Allah reward them abundantly.
Mal. Umar Sheu often led the Qur'ān class, but when he was unavailable, his student, Engineer Abdus-salaam Babaniyan would be in charge. The class used to hold immediately after Solaat Fajr every Saturday and Sunday.
After completing the Qur'ān Recitation and its Tajweed Analysis in Hafs Riwaayah, Mal. Umar proceeded to teaching us the next Riwaayah, Ruwaayatu Warsh.
I was particularly interested in learning this and other versions of reciting the Qur'ān besides Hafs.
However, I had difficulty understanding the lesson due to language barrier as Mal. Umar usually taught t in Hausa, which I was not proficient in yet, even though he spoke fluent English.
Consequently, I sought the help of Engineer Abdus-salaam Babaniyan, who had learned Warsh from Mal. before. He graciously scheduled personal Warsh classes for me, he used to teach me with English and sometimes Arabic and his teaching was exemplary.
Although we could not complete the lessons, as we were treating the principles regarding Hamzah when he got his lecturing job and had to travel away from home.
After every class, I used to go home or to a nearby Masjid to practice/rehearse the lesson Mal. taught me. I continued to practice the lessons on my own, even attimes recording my recitation for self-evaluation.
While checking my archive this evening I came across this video of myself reciting Surah Al-Fath 48 using Riwaayah Warsh from one of my practice sessions, and I decided to share it. Listen to it below.
May Allah continue to bless my Ustadh, Engineer Abdus-salaam Babaniyan, Mal. Bilyaminu Safiyanu, our great Sheikh Mal. Umar Sheu, and all our teachers. May He continue to guide and bless them in this world and the hereafter. Ameen.
Hopefully, I'm going to meet my beautiful Malams as I return to Minna soon, In sha Allah.
