My biggest disappointment with the education system is how it prioritizes the subject over its actual learning. Let me explain: In my first Sociology class, I was hammered on about the deep specifics of Marxism; in my first English Literature class, I was hammered on about the deep specifics of poetic form; in my first Media Studies class, I was hammered on about the particulars of how mise-en-scene creates representation. The issue is, of course, they were my first classes!
When you look at the breadth of a subject, it seems magnanimous. I believe that as teachers, it is our job to bring the subject down to the understanding of the student, as opposed to expecting a student to match the subject's height.
In the first Sociology class I took, we discussed memes; in the first English Literature class I took, we listened to Taylor Swift; in the first Media Studies class I took, we watched a scene from '3 Idiots'. The funny thing is, I was explaining Marxism, poetic form, and mise-en-scene still.
The students were just understanding it for the first time now!
