I was teaching Public Speaking Classes to students from Grade 5-8, covering topics such as debate, poetry, politics, confidence, fear, skill, and technique. Students would complete homework packages that consisted of 2 parts, the written portion which served to structure the student's speech and organize their thoughts, and the speaking portion, where students would present their speeches in front of the teacher and their peers. Students are graded on their level of preparation, the written content of their speech, their vocal quality, body language, poise and confidence, and elements of audience interaction. The student's grades serve to show their progress and highlight their individual strengths and weaknesses as public speakers. The course would culminate in a final showcase presentation in front of fellow students, students from other PS classes, friends and family. Students who excelled in the course or who had a fervent passion for Public Speaking could go on to enroll in specialized courses like debate, where they train to compete in organized provincial wide competitions. The purpose of this course is to give students the space and necessary instruction on Public Speaking to improve their skills and increase their self-worth and confidence overall. The curriculum teaches concepts like the distinctions between formal and informal tone, vocabulary expansion, literary devices, and speaking with passion, motivation, persuasion.
