Hi! My name is Marian and I am a university student that has been tutoring since I was in high school as a hobby. I have recently moved from the States (Tampa, Florida in particular) to Manila and wish to resume tutoring as a side gig since it is something I enjoy. I currently reside in BGC and thus, I am more inclined to tutor within my area.

I specialize in subjects such as math, English, writing, reading, and history. I started tutoring back in my junior year of high school when a friend suggested I joined the club for tutors since she mentioned I had a knack for explaining concepts to other people in ways they can easily digest. I started out as a math tutor for my school's club, offering after-school assistance to students who needed to catch up on their math subjects. The subjects I helped with ranged from Algebra, Geometry, Pre-calculus, and Trigonometry. From there, I branched out into becoming an English and literature tutor after I scored a 5 on the AP Literature and Composition exam. Consequently, I taught students how to perform literary analysis on texts from different cultures and learn how to write strong essays.

My teaching method consists of focusing on a topic the student does not quite grasp. I usually start the sessions by testing the student to understand their strengths and weaknesses in the subject, and then concentrating on addressing those weaknesses in the subsequent sessions. What makes me a great tutor is that I am a great communicator. I place emphasis on communicating with the students and the parents so that the student is not afraid to communicate their position to me. I also like to meet with the student or the student with their parents first at some nearby coffee shop (this was prior to the pandemic) to discuss the goals of the sessions, decide on proper compensation, and the tutoring schedule, as well as confirming compatibility before proceeding further.

As a result of my employed teaching method, my results have been positive. For subjects that rely heavily on concepts, my students have shown progress in excelling at them. My last student had been a third grader who has become more proficient and confident with their English after the two months of sessions that we had to prepare them for their move to the States from Manila. For math, I have seen positive results from my students who went from scoring Ds to Bs and As in their Algebra, Geometry, and Pre-calculus tests.

Fee details

    5001,500/hour (US$8.5325.58/hour)

The fee would vary depending on (1) how many subjects I am expected to teach (math, English, and science all together would warrant a higher fee as opposed to concentrating on only one subject), (2) the distance I have to travel, although I have always taught in areas that are within where I live (BGC, in this case), and (3) the number of students I have to tutor (if it's more than one student, the fee will be higher).
