My teaching style is to let students wonder from what they hear, first. Then learn more through Q&A. I make sure everyone understands. I give them exercises and let them solve them by themselves (1st). Then go and see the questions they might have and keep helping them until they reach the solution. I do not like examinations or tests, unless they require consultation. I prefer thinking and developing an ability to find things rather than using memory. I have published most of my lecture notes, for future students to use. I classify each question in an examination in advance (quantitatively) and solve the examination my self before presenting it to the students. I estimate the time it would take them to solve it. This has worked well for many years. I had a 14-yr evaluation success of 4 marks out of 5 (students evaluating me and my lectures - plenty of different subjects and difference students - from different courses). I have developped from scratch several subjects, many of which were a "pleasure", according to many of my students.

Went to the University of Madeira to set up a new research group (in Astronomy) as well as a new 5-yr engineering degree course (in Instrumentation & Electronics Astronomy) and also plenty of activites for the public, culminating in the International Year of Astronomy 2009. A seed was left over there (supervised PhD student that now is a Professor).
