My Teaching Philosophy
Teaching Arabic Language and Literature has become the most interesting hobby in my life not only because 28 out of my 41 years of age was sacrificed for the language, for both training and teaching, rather, because I was raised in an African family in the northern Nigeria who value and promote Arabic Language even more than the local tongues. My father long experience as a Professor of Arabic Rhetoric for 30 years gave me a very strong potential of Arabic professionalism.
My first professional encounter to teach Arabic at a higher level was 18 years ago when I was given a diploma course in Arabic Rhetoric to teach at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Nigeria in the year 2005 and the same scenario repeated 2006-2007 session when I was posted to Bayero University Kano Nigeria for my National Youth Corp, my students feedback in the two occasions was you definitely got your training among the native speakers or perhaps one of your 2 parents is a native speaker.
As a lecturer of Arabic Language and Literature for over 15 years in 5 different Universities, Yahya’s teaching is underpinned by the concept of “students as partners” As such, he believe in a collaborative learning environment where students are increasingly engaged and involved in learning and teaching assessment, pedagogical consultancy, subject- based inquiry and scholarship, he enjoys using various modern techniques in teaching foreign language to non-speaker.
My style in class is to make my students feel the simplicity of Arabic Language, particularly to a foreign student, I engage students with multiple examples, and draw a relative examples between their origin language and Arabic at levels of sound, syntax, morphology and lexicography. I open the mind of my students in to the intra-cultural relationship between world languages.
My commitment to impact learning Arabic in my locality has given opportunity to serve as Arabic consultant for conventional schools in Nigeria, such as; Noble-Mind school, recently I successfully launched 2 programmes titled: “Training the Trainee in Arabic Language” and “Arabic for Specific Purposes” the first programme was meant to improve the performance of Arabic Teachers in conventional colleges in Nigeria, while the second was designed for the expatriates in the middle east.
During the class period with students, I do make emphasis on the importance of students’ individual and collective interest, the curiosity to develop their own effective understanding and communication skills of Arabic. I incorporate individual expression and creativity into what many students deem impossible and difficult to cope with.
Even within a limited context of curriculum structure, I believe that my job is to teach students about more than Arabic Language. My role is to help empower students on the cultural diversity and the long history heritage of the Language.
