Dear Student,

I have had the good fortunate of encountering extraordinary instructors throughout my education, so I try to utilize what I have found exceptional and apply it in my own classroom. As a Turkish national born in Saudi Arabia and raised in Kuwait, I received schooling in a bilingual environment, where I was taught English and Arabic from my native speaking American, Canadian, and Middle Eastern teachers. Growing up in the culturally diverse environment of Kuwait, I was given the opportunity to work with international students and instructors from the Middle East, Asia, and Europe in multicultural settings like Sylvan Learning, American Creativity Academy (American School of Kuwait), Kuwait University, and the State University of New York. I have tutored international students extensively in Turkey, Kuwait, and the United States, have carried out research in language and literature as a TA with Dr. Mousa Qasem and Dr. Amin Al Muhanna at Kuwait University as well as the International Summer School at Turkey’s renowned Koc University. I have taught (ESL) reading & writing courses at Istanbul Sehir University, literature courses such as Literary Theory & Criticism, English Poetry, Film Adaptations, Academic Writing, and British Literature 1-4 at Istinye University where I am currently employed, and have offered support to refugees with limited or interrupted education at Boston’s Somali Development Center. My training at Boston University’s TESOL masters program and my TA experience at Kuwait University and the State University of New York at Binghamton as well as my assistant professor position at Istinye University in Istanbul has paved the way and provided a set of excellent opportunities for me to develop my teaching philosophy. In order to facilitate an honest exchange from the start, I try to foster an environment where no one is afraid to speak their mind, ask questions, and enjoy the process of (multimedia) learning that involves various digital (and other traditional) means. I also think students learn best when the material and content is made relevant to them, so I try to adapt the content to match their needs and interests. Additionally, I try to incorporate my knowledge about the students into the lessons to captivate their attention and facilitate interaction. I strongly encourage students to use the time during and after class if they need further assistance or feedback. I highly value critical thinking in the classroom, so I try to provide a variety of learning tools, models, and examples. I understand that recycling information helps promote noticing, and I help motivate students by recognizing their work and congratulating them when they perform well or understand the material. While these methods are not required for literature courses perse, they have been proven to be useful in both my English language and literature courses. My approach to teaching has been impacted by various sources, including my instructors, my training at Boston University, my work experience at Istinye University, the studies I have read, and the research I have carried out. I believe that instructors should cater to learners’ needs at all levels and facilitate learning as affectively as possible regardless of the methods employed. Thank you for considering me.

Best,
Asst.Prof. Leyla Savsar
