Over the years I have come to realize that of a truth, most students are affected by the quality of
their teachers. Not only do they interact with teachers every day in the classroom, but the quality
of that interaction matters for our students’ as well as their teacher's future.
When I came to this realization, I researched and adopted my 5-key point of engagements which
has also extended into other areas of my personal and professional activities. These include;
1. The ability to develop relationships with the students: the most frequent response is that a
great teacher develops relationships with students. As a teacher, I have made it as a need to be
able to build trusting relationships with students and colleagues in order to create a safe, positive
and productive learning environment.
2. Patience, caring and kind personality: personality characteristics related to being a
compassionate person and having a sensitivity to student differences, particularly with learners,
was the second most frequently reported quality. I have since learnt to appreciate individual
qualities, differences and to build formidable change makers through what I describe as:
Creativity in Diversity for Productivity".
3. Knowledge of learners: I have come to appreciate that this is a broad category that
incorporates knowledge of the cognitive, social and emotional development of learners. It
includes an understanding of how students learn at a given developmental level; how learning in
a specific subject area typically progresses like learning progressions or trajectories; awareness
that learners have individual needs and abilities; and an understanding that instruction should be
tailored to meet each learner’s needs.
4. Dedication to teaching: this is one of my very best. Dedication refers to a love of teaching or
passion for the work, which includes commitment to students’ success. Responses often referred
to loving the subject matter or simply being dedicated to the work. To a student, this means a
teacher should be “always willing to help and give time.”
5. Engaging students in learning: Students also say that teachers should be able to engage and
motivate students to learn. Researchers talk about three types of engagement that are required for students to learn: cognitive, emotional, and behavioral. Survey respondents mostly focused on making content interesting and the ability to motivate students to learn.
I wish to say that, teaching as my current career has a deep influence on my general engagement
with people; old or young. And it will surprise you how application of these 5 core principles in
my activities has help to positively transform most of my relationship for good.
