I focus on communicate the lecture on a way the students will understand how the subject in the lecture is used in praxis. The students need to see the connection to real life. Understanding the why, gives the logic in the homework, the assignments and at the exams.
If the student needs learning by practical virilization, that is not problem, we will do so, let's play if it helps. then relate this to the text of the book, and how it is possible to associate this in the exam setting - remember not only the text of the book, but what we did during the learning.
