The purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner, and thus no longer need a tutor.If someone is working on a problem for a topic they have learnt before, they likely know - to some degree or other - the process or the underlying ideas, but are simply finding it difficult to put into the context of this specific problem. Maths problems are often very difficult to unpick until you are really confident with the material, as an unfamiliar situation may appear to be a completely unfamiliar problem even if it can be solved in the same way.
