Please feel free to contact me for a free consultation. I'm not hard to find. I rarely respond to the notices I receive. While the cost is low the return has been non-existent. Many requests are for one time assignment help or even for taking exams. One time help for a low fee does not cover my response costs, and I will not take an exam for anyone. Therefore I am not likely to respond to your general request which the site sends out to many tutors, but if you are a serious student looking for a highly qualified teacher or tutor who speak clear English then contact me!

Background:

I tutor and teach courses online and accept students from any location.

I tutor primarily mathematics and physics. I have 2 M.Sc. degrees in Physics and Math and a B.Sc. degree in Systems Engineering and have worked for IBM, Intel and other companies and labs as well as offering consulting at times. My teaching experience ranges from Grade 8 through graduate level. I also do SAT and GRE review and preparation.

My experience in both industry and education is extensive.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught for numerous US universities including two international programs abroad, and also at 2 foreign universities. Courses taught range from pre-college material through specialized graduate courses in math and engineering.

Internationally I have taught for 3 high schools and was academic director for one of them. My school experience was with middle school math and general science, GCSE physics, grade 11 US physics and grade 12 math (non-AP calculus). Due to urgent needs I also filled in for Chemistry for one term and history for a short time but I do not feel qualified to teach these under normal situations or to tutor them.

For the past 5 years I have taught Legal English for the University of Georgia and I enjoy this subject and will tutor it. I can also tutor technical (STEM) English and conversational English but I do not teach general English with grammar etc.

Methods and Resources:

I use a webcam on a white board, the notebook webcam, a document camera and screen composition software that lets me share excel, websites such as Desmos, my cameras and more either individually or in custom combinations.

I do all my own server work and run several web servers related to online education. One of them runs an installation of MAA Webwork which is great for assigning practice problems and homework. You will be hard pressed to find anyone else doing this.

Many online teachers today are constantly searching for prepared curricula which they can simply present. I do not believe in this, I prepare all materials and syllabi myself based on my teaching experience and subject knowledge. These are tailored to the class and/or student. If I create something useful during a tutoring session I usually send it to the student afterwards. (Materials such as Desmos graphs, excel workbooks, etc.)

I can tutor any curriculum used in North America, Europe or in International Schools. The math and physics is all the same, just the approach and difficulty vary. I can accommodate any approach and any level as long as I have access to the materials being used.

Rates

My rates are very competitive. I routinely see students who have not even completed a B.Sc. degree charging more than I do. Sometimes by quite a bit. Some would not have been hired at the university "help desk" I ran. I also see tutors who would have a hard time passing my university courses, but they charge a lot for tutoring anyway.

So why hire a student when you can get the professor for a competitive cost?

Having said that, I cannot compete with tutors in poor countries who charge $10 an hour or less. My experience and education have come at a cost and my cost of living is not all that high but not negligible either.

Contact me today for a free consultation of unlimited duration and we can discuss your goals and how to move forward towards them. I'm not hard to find.

If you are interested in the details of my experience teaching and/or in industry (where, when, etc) please request a c.v.

Experience

  • Engineer/Scientist (May, 1984Present) at Various Companies
I have worked as an engineer and scientist in a number of major companies as well as in academic research labs. At Intel I worked as a process engineer in lithography (all printing and etching processes). At IBM I worked in computer design (diagnostic microcode then logic design) then in semconductor yield analysis and prediction. At Morton-Thiokol I investigated the use of robotics and automated FTIR for assuring the quality of space shuttle solid fuel batches prior to mixing.

Other shorter term research associate jobs were in cloud physics, unsaturated flows in porous media, and bipolar transistor physics.

As a private consultant I produce avalanche engineering reports for use in structural designs, insurance claims and due diligence reports.
  • Invited/Adjunct Professor; Assistant (Jan, 1981Present) at Various universities
I have taught courses at RPI, USU, Oregon Tech, San Diego State University, UMD European Division, Black Sea University in Tbilisi and University of Georgia in Tbilisi. Courses have ranged from pre-college math through graduate level.

I have also taught middle school science and high school physics and math in 3 international schools. Two used the GCSE curriculum and one used their version of a US curriculum. In one of those school I was assistant director and oversaw academics, parent meetings, etc.

My extensive teaching experience is better documented on my CV, as well as Linked In and Facebook.

Education

  • M.Sc. Mathematics (Sep, 1987Dec, 1989) from Utah State University
  • M.Sc. Physics (Sep, 1986May, 1989) from Utah State University
  • B.Sc. Electrical Computer and Systems Engineering (Sep, 1979May, 1983) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York

Fee details

    US$39/hour (US$39.34/hour)

My base rate is $40 per hour, in USD. I also make arrangements for discounts for paying ahead for a certain number of hours or for groups. Although I do not create groups and do not believe in group tutoring unless the group exists and has students at the same level in the same class.
