I approach teaching with an equal mix of rigor and fun. The fun bit is necessary because classes tend to be very intense and requires great focus. Teaching children with zero experience in an academic setting exposes them to much more thinking than they're used to. The struggle is very real for them. However, I also get them reading in a few months, so it pays off. Classes extend to all aspects of life, and students typically end up strong, independent and unassailable. By introducing them to the joys of learning, laying the foundations for logical reasoning and providing a map of their own mind, students can operate autonomously after awhile. It is a challenging and unconventional route, but necessary for the education of the largest number of students with minimal reliance on an external driver.
