Kural (குறள்) is a type of poetic meter, which belongs to a poetic meter family called Venpa (வெண்பா). Kural venba has 2 lines and 7 words. There are many more grammatical restrictions about Venpa in general, Kural Venpa in particular. You can start your knowledge about Venpa here - .
Thirukkural is a book which contains the poets’ thoughts, messages, advises and ideas about various topics ranging from God, Rain, individual characteristics, social behavior, love life etc. There are 133 such topics and each topic has 10 poems written in Kural Venpa (making it 1330 in total).
The book doesn’t contain any details like name of the author / name of the book etc. The name was coined later by authors who wrote commentaries for the book. It was given the name Thirukkural - “Thiru” is a honorary / holy word and “Kural” refers to the poetic meter in which it was composed.
Importance of Thirukkural:
The author (Thiruvalluvar) has touched upon several topics. There are lots of learning at a personal level. Even if we can imbibe 10% of what is conveyed in the book, we will be a much better person.
